I Hope everyone enjoyed their shortened Mid Winter Break and are excited to get back to school this week…. and boy do we have a fun week ahead of us!!!!

I always say that February and March are two of my personal favorite months of the year at Busy Bee. Visiting the classes during this time reminds me why this is the case. It makes me so happy to see the children so engaged in their play and learning.

This week will get off to an awesome start with our 100th day of school celebration on Tuesday. We have been busy for weeks preparing the children for the big Treasure Hunt on Tuesday. Every child is welcome to come to school at their regular times for the Treasure Hunt. The children will be following a series of clues that will lead them to 10 different destinations around the building where they will find a treasure bag. The goal for the children is to be able to hunt for 10 bags filled with 10 treasures, ensuring that everyone will go home with 100 treasures. Besides being fun, this day is all about counting, following lots of directions and handling many different transitions through-out the day. Again, all important skills to ensure success in pre-school and beyond.

If you have not brought in your items for the treasure hunt, please do so tomorrow. There is much planning and sorting of the treasures that needed to be done. Items that are brought in on Tuesday will not be able to be used for the hunt.
We will be starting the month of March off with two very special units that will help springboard us into spring (pun intended). The celebration of Dr. Seuss’s Bday (March 2) will be one of our main focuses this week followed by Rainbow Week next week (I will send out another email later in the week about the activities for Rainbow WeeK).
Besides being one of the most influential of all children’s authors, Dr. Seuss is also my personal favorite. His combination of playful rhymes, fun loving stories and vividly beautiful text illustrations has lent to their impact on generations of children young and old. This week at Busy Bee, the children will be exposed to the wonders of the ‘Books of Seuss.’

We will revisiting many of Seuss’s favorite characters as we read a variety of his stories aloud. They will be engaging in language play (alliterative language, rhyming, listening activities and sound patterns) as the children recognize and match words that rhyme. A beginning mastery of these skills will help with our goal of becoming emergent readers.

Some of the titles that we will be focusing on are Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s, There’s a Wocket in my Pocket, Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, and Horton Hatches the Egg, Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? to name a few.

I look forward to another fun week at Busy Bee.
Mr. Ric

This Week at Busy Bee

by Ric on January 15, 2018

It was another fantastic week at school last week as the kids are doing a super job signing in, our portraits for January are finished and on display and we are in the process of creating our name snowman projects. The teachers have also been trying to add some new centers into the rooms as well and play lots of small group games. All this hard work is really paying off…..as our class rooms are becoming such a fun, happy and explorative place to be. I spend some time in each room last week just observing the children and their interactions. It makes me so happy to see such positive little communities of learners, explorers and growers in the rooms. jan4

Tomorrow will be day 77 at school….. we are quickly approaching our 100 day of school and the big Busy Bee 100 Day of School Treasure Hunt (there will be more info to follow with you February Calendars). The children have been doing many great counting activities and some of the classes are working on their skip counting by 10′s!!!!! jan1

We are really trying to give your children a very rich early literacy experience at school these days. We continue to work on our letter recognition, letter sounds, rhyming and all the fun things that come along with the Dr. Suess ABC book and our growing repertoire of letters and words in American Sign Language. We still focus on who the author and illustrator is of each story, we take time to examine the cover of the book to make predictions on our stories. We have also begun to talk about who the characters are in stories, what the setting is of the book (where is the story taking place) and ask various comprehension and retelling questions at the end of the book. jan3

With your children exposed to so many of these early literacy skills, combined with the attention given to their fine motor, letter formation and creative arts….. it is time for us to create our own stories. We will use one of my favorite children’s book ‘A snowy day’ by Ezra Jack Keats and a new favorite ‘Snow Happy’ by Patricia Hubbell to really work on the skill of retelling. The classes will talk all about the adventures the characters in these book have during their time in the snow and then illustrate and write their own personal narrative’s about winter over the next few weeks.
All in all it is going to be a very fun couple of weeks at school.. We will also be collecting empty cereal boxes for a special project in February. So please save your empty boxes over the next few weeks and send them in.

Mr. Ric
